Inquiry Questions (due 1/26 and 1/29) by 11:59pm

Considering Greene's criteria for generating inquiry based research questions, write an open-ended research question that you are interested in pursuing for the rest of the term.

Greene's Criteria:
1. The question can be answered with the tools you have
2. The question conveys a clear idea of who you are answering the question for
3. The question is organized around an issue
4. The question explores "how," "why," or "whether," and the "extent to which."
5. There are no prepackaged answers for the question
6. The question grows out of some issue or fundamental tension

After you write your research question, you are required to deliver some feedback to at least three of your peers. Your job as a reviewer of your peer's questions is to aid in the development and progression of the person's research project. How can the question be phrased in a better way? Are there offshoot questions that might help the person consider another angle to the question? If the question doesn't meet some of Greene's characteristics, what can be done to help? Might there be an interesting research method you could suggest? When you reply to a peer, you must reply to a peer who has less than three responses. It is important that everyone get responses from at least three people.

What is most important to me is that you are pursuing some subject that interests you. If you are really interested in your research project, this class will be much more worth your while. If you need inspiration, look at some of the videos I have posted on the course home page. Go to Ted.com and watch some of the world's best speakers. Read the opinions of bloggers and or the editorial sections of some online news papers. You might also check out some of these presentations:

  2. How do nature and nurture influence a person's ethical sense and general personality and which of the two plays a bigger role?

    1. I think your question addresses too many things at once. I think it may be better to either focus on one's morals, one's personality, or morals as a personality trait, rather than attempting to address them separately. Maybe a better way you can phrase the question would be something along the lines of the following:
To what extent are one's morals (or personality--if that's what you choose to focus on) dependent upon the nature vs nurture debate? And if so, which of the two plays a bigger role in the development of these morals (or personality)?
I think as you do your research and write your paper, you should make sure to focus on how it varies from person to person (or environment to environment, culture to culture, etc).

    2. I think this is an awesome area to explore, because people usually have a stand on which side they feel has more of an effect, nature or nurture. It will be interesting to see what research shows.

      Delete
    3. Regarding the nature vs. nurture debate, which I find to be very interesting, you can explain how genes affect personality. Another thing you could do is find some research on how similar or different adopted children are to their biological parents.

  4. How has media aimed at children influenced a child's idea of what their gender role should be in society, and to what extent do children feel the need to fulfill these stereotypes and roles?

    1. This is an important question because, in today's society media plays a large role in a child's development. I think it would benefit in your research to look not only at the influence media has on today's children but, also on past generations so that you can compare and contrast how things have or, have not, changed over the years.
In my opinion, the beginning of your question can be reworded to sound more scholarly, for example, "In what ways has media marketed towards children, influenced a child's perception of...." But, overall its a great topic.

    2. I really like what you are trying to do with this question. I think the second part of your question is extremely important because I have been around people who constantly worry about stereotypes and I have seen how it has affected them. Maybe to narrow down your research you could look at how a specific type of media is aimed at children! Good luck with this!

      Delete
    3. I think beginning your question with "To what extent" would be more appropriate, rather than saying "How has" because the latter sounds like you're assuming the answer to your question. Saying "to what extent" will allow you to research both possibilities and compare/contrast whatever findings you get from researching.

    4. I think this is a really good topic, i found it very interesting when we watched that vid in class about this. I also agree with Arielle about adding "to what extent". I think this is a good topic because its very relevant among children today and there will probably be a lot of info on it on the web.

      Delete
    5. I really like your question. The second part of the question is a good point to address. It will show how the media shows children what role they should play and the affect it has on children falling into the different sterotypes.

  5. What long-term effects do concussions have on professional football players after their careers, and what measures is the National Football League taking to help prevent, reduce, and treat these brain injuries?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I could be wrong seeing as I do not follow football as closely as some people but, I know I have heard about this topic an abundance of times. Perhaps, instead of focusing on the NFL directly, you can form your question around the decrease in youth playing football and how that correlates with the medias attention on concussions (and their effects) in the NFL and how this might cause problems for the NFL 10-20 years in the future.

      Delete
    2. Hey Chad, I feel like your question may have a "prepackaged answer" already. Maybe you should try to reword it along the lines of "how have the long term effects suffered by professional football players led the NFL to try and take precautions to prevent, reduce, and treat brain injuries?"

      Delete
    3. hey man i think its a great question. I like Christina's response to it but i dont really think youth playing football is anyhow decreasing at any level. I dont think it has actually hit them yet because since the development of all these researches on concussions only safe playing rules are what have been established. Everything else is still the same. Players get hit and they hit others and the popularity is increasing day by day. I think you should keep your focus on the aftermath (post career) of the players and how it has been influencing their lives including work life and etc.

      Delete
    4. This is an interesting topic, but your question seems to have a definite answer to it already. You might want to change up the question or even open up the question to a broader topic.

      Delete
    5. Hey Chad, I think your question is great in discussion the topic of what the NFL is doing in regard of Players' safety. There's some room to move around in this topic by looking at retired players who are affected by past injuries to this day and the ethics of the NFL whom are earning profit from these major hits.

    2. I find this really interesting considering I'm going in an engineering field which is traditionally male dominated. I'm following in the footsteps of my dad and grandfather, the latter of which said that when he first started working it was extremely rare to be working with women. Now when I go to my engineering classes I'm happy to see a good number of women.

      Delete
    3. I think this is a really engaging topic of choice. In my personal opinion, I think you've worded your question very well and there isn't much feedback I can offer. I'm really interested in hearing about what you discover through you're research!

      Delete
    4. I think this is a great topic to write about. Social justice movements have long-term effects in many seemingly unrelated areas. This question addresses some of the effects on education and economics. If I were covering this topic, I might try comparing the numbers of women in traditionally male dominant fields in different countries. Specifically, I would try to compare the numbers of women in these fields in America to technologically advanced countries that may not have the same social movements, such as China or Japan (though Japan has been experiencing change in gender roles with the integration of American culture.)

    1. I like where this topic is going, you can talk about how apps such as, Tinder are basing dating criteria on looks alone and how communication is restricted through use of digital devices.

      Delete
    2. I think this is a really interesting topic, especially as technology continues to prosper and have larger impacts on each new coming generation. Having the option to find a potential mate online has really changed the typical standards for communicating with one another. I'm excited to see how this plays out!

      Delete
    3. Personally, i think this is a great question when social media grows extensively every year. You are able to include comparisons from "extinct" social media such as myspace and the one most of us use today such as Facebook, twitter, and many more. You can also include the consequences of how less face to face interaction have on someones social life and the issues that can bring into someone's life.

      Delete
    4. I think this is a very intriguing and relatable question to many people today. I think you could bring many different viewpoints into this topic. Maybe consider why so any people are turning to online dating? What has caused such an influx? But seriously this a good topic!

      Delete
    5. I think this is a good topic, especially because its relevant in today's time. This could probably also be asked about other forms of social media too.

    6. I think this is a great question because it allows us to reflect on ourselves in some ways to see how our behavior changes when we are online versus in person.

  8. To what extent can comic books be seen as objectifying women and how are the growing number of female consumers changing the industry?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think it would benefit your paper if you meshed those two questions into one, rather than looking at them separately. For example, you could say something like "In what ways has the growing number of female consumers changed the way comic books traditionally objectify women?" or something along those lines

      Delete
    2. I think this question is really interesting, I personally have know prior knowledge on comic books and the industry they are produced in, so I wouldn't have thought they had an affect; I'm excited to see what you discover!

      Delete
    3. I love this question, especially because poeple have become desensitized to the objectification of women in many media forms. In areas traditionally marketed to males, the objectification and over-sexualization of women is commonplace. I think that with the gender-role social movements, and the subsequent increase in women who take interest in these industries, the objectification can cease or at least decrease. I am interested to see in what ways this has already started taking place. I would maybe try comparing older comic books and the way women are portrayed to newer comic books or newer renditions of the classics.

      Delete
  9. Loving thus question. A good thing to even add is the amount of comics that feature male leads compared to females and how many of those male leads are turned into movies!

  10. In what ways did Oscar Wilde's personal tragedies influence his portrayal of societal classes in The Importance of Being Earnest?

    1. I find this question interesting as Wilde is a personal favorite. I'm curious as to how you will come up with an answer to this question. Will your research compare his portrayal of social classes in The Importance of Being Ernest to portrayals of social classes in his other works? Or will it focus more on his portrayal compared to other prominent authors in his time period?

    1. I think that you will have a lot to research on this topic. Another way you could ask this question is to what extent has first generation students impacted society in America. This is a very interesting topic and I will be looking forward to seeing your research findings.

      Delete
    2. I think its an interesting topic. It wont be hard to find some studies relating to the effects of first generation students on graduation rate in college. You can compare both the money being invested on them and the compare it to the outcome.

      Delete
    3. This is a good topic to explore in a demographic sense. Maybe look at how first generation students fair against those who are not or maybe those students who do not continue to a higher education and commit to the military or workforce.

  12. As humans, what attaches us to certain people while others come and go in passing?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I like your question a lot. You have several paths that you can take to answer this question, and being able to address multiple resources such as social media, human interaction, etc. will greatly help you establish a research paper. One advice would be to be carefully make sure to not misinterpret the question to "as humans, what ATTRACTS us..." because those are two completely different questions which may confuse readers.

      Delete
    2. I really like your question and i have actually studied some psychological studies that relates to your research question. I dont remember the names of the studies on top of my head but i will let you know in class. You can mention like we are more attached to the people that are alike us and we try to create a distance between those who are not. That was one of the conclusion of the study.

      Delete
    3. I find your question really interesting considering I've asked myself this question many times before. I believe this question would speak to a very large audience, which could also be somewhat of a downfall. However, you may want to reword it in a way. What do you mean by 'attaches'? As in being attracted to someone or as in just feeling a connection?

      Delete
    4. Great question. You could also ask how people decide who they want to incorporate in their life. What does that process look like?

  13. To what extent does your mood change as you listen to different genre of music?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think this is a very interesting topic. I feel like you can also simply ask "How does your mood change as you listen to different genre of music?" You can also research whether your mood dictates the genre of music you listen to or the genre of music you listen to dictates your mood.

      Delete
    2. I like this question a lot. I know for myself music can definitely effect my mood. I think that you will have a lot to research on this topic. One thing you could research is what genre of music do people listen to when they are in certain moods.

      Delete
    3. I find this to be a great question especially since music is such a big topic in our generation. It will be something a lot of people can relate to and I'm curious to see what you find out. Something you could look into is comparing how many people change the genre of music for their mood vs how many people continue to listen to their preferred genre no matter what their mood is.

      Delete
    4. This is definitely an interesting thought, however, I'm not sure if this question exactly is a good inquiry for this assignment. I'm not saying it's not a good question, but personally I'm not sure how I would go about forming an argument here. I would definitely be interested to see how you go about using this topic for your research paper

      Delete
    5. I definitely love the direction you're taking, a lot of people can relate to how are the type of music we listen to depending on our mood (sad songs when your said, heavy metal when you're angry, etc.) but I have never considered how the altering effects music has on our mood.

      Delete
    6. I think this is an interesting music, you could also relate it to how personality reflects the music one choses to listen to. I think this is a good topic of choice.

  14. To what extent have harsh punishments for any involvement in school fights led to the common practice of ignoring people’s need for help in violent situations?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I like where this question is going. It seems we are more focussed on punishment than on helping kids who may need help. I think your could really dive deep into the areas about school related violence. How and why does it originate? You could look at the demographics or race, different geographic locations, and public verses private schools. It may help to look first into what factors may be causing the violence in the first place. But i find your question very relevant and interesting!

      Delete
    2. I think this is a great question because it will take a look at how harsh punishment prevents or don't prevent further violent situation in school.

  15. Why has there been an increase in arm injuries to baseball players?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This is a very interesting question. Playing baseball all my life I have seen many people have serious arm injuries. One way you could go about researching this is looking at are players arms getting overused when they are younger, causing them to have injuries when they get older. I'm interested to see what you find during your research.

      Delete
    2. Although I do not follow baseball I do love sports. Maybe you could show statistical data about injuries over the pass decade, or any time period for that matter!

      Delete
    3. To go off Daniel's point that injuries can occur from overuse at a young age, I think a lot can be said about form. There is a difference between throwing a baseball and throwing it in a way that limits injury.

      Delete
    4. This question may be a bit to simple and straightforward for this assignment. Perhaps you could look into the causes of the increase in arm injuries as well as the possible solutions. Try to make an argument for implementation of new policies or procedures to help reduce the risk of arm injuries.

      Delete
    5. Although you have an interesting topic, I think it may be too broad which may impact your essay negatively. If i were you i would try rewording your question and narrowing it down.

  16. To what extent has performance enhancing drugs effected baseball, post steroid era?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I find this question really interesting. You could mention how the amount of manners someone has could effect the way in which they frame things they say to others, which could potentially lead to coming off as 'rude' or 'arrogant', even though they don't know any better. Where as on the other hand, someone who has good manners or possesses a wider vocabulary could have an upper hand when it comes to getting favored by others.

I do think, however, you could work on rewording the question. Maybe something like To what degree does certain music effect the creative writing process? I know this might not be the greatest advice, but hopefully you can take something from it. But your question is relevant to our society i feel like and it is interesting!
