Working With Human Subjects (Due 2/25 by 11:59pm)

Working with human subjects can be tricky business, but luckily for us, you will not be poking or prodding any of your research subjects (so there should be minimal risk to those you plan to interview, survey, or experiment with).

With that said, it is still critical that you disclose information to the human subjects you are working with. Universities have developed an Internal Review Board (IRB) system to make sure researchers comply with local, state, and federal ethics standards. As students who are in a first-year writing course, you do not have to complete IRB training to work with human subjects, but it is critically important that you disclose your intentions in writing to the people you are working with.

Please review the following information provided by Colorado State University:

http://writing.colostate.edu/guides/page.cfm?pageid=1426

Upon reviewing the link above, you are tasked with developing an informed consent disclosure form to give to any participants you are studying. The site above gives plenty of information about what should appear in your disclosure form. Participants should sign the form and return it to you. You should provide each participant with an additional copy if said participant wants it for his/her records.

If your research involves textual analysis and you are not working with human subjects, please write a detailed outline about how your textual analysis will work.

I recommend you create your disclosure form as a word document and then paste it into the text box of this blog space.

Here is another link to a Google Images page that has many examples of Informed Consent Forms:

  3. For my study I plan on conducting a coded content analysis, similar to that of Dawn England et. al (2011), of the 12 Disney Princess movies in order to examine them for stereotypes of major organizing principles of society: gender, race, and family (Towbin et. al 2008). The specific films to be analyzed include Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Mulan, The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Brave, and Frozen. This method will allow me to gather quantitative information about the behaviors of the characters in the films (England et. al 2011). My codes will be very similar, if not identical to the ones set forth by England, and I will replicate an inductive analysis created by Mia Towbin et. al (2008) to identify common themes.

  4. For my study I plan to conduct a textual analysis of Deaf Culture, which will involve me looking into the Deaf community. With examining the social aspect of the community; how they are being accepted, and how are non-Deaf people acknowledging those who are Deaf. In doing so I will look into research done, but I will also examine certain news stories that address the topic. With doing this the idea of researching how certain popular entertainment, such as variety in t.v. shows and on Broadway, will expand more on the topic of creating careers and jobs for Deaf people. This will allow me to create quantitative data about the stigma against Deaf people and their stance on being accepted socially. The reason for looking into certain data sources like these is, the popularity in the social world that is now being seen from a different perspective. Popular shows have arise in recent years bringing light to the situation, giving new meaning to Deaf Culture. This is what I intend to bring my textual analysis upon.

I plan to conduct a study on human attachment styles and how technological advancements have affected our attachments in romantic relationships. I will be gathering information from those in current and former romantic relationships, both long term and in the early stages. Varying lengths in relationships will allow a spectrum of factors to fall into the data presented. By agreeing to participate in this study you are allowing your personal information to be used as statistical data in a public format via answers and photographs and all rights of this information to be used in future research. You are given to right to leave the discussion at any moment, but know all prior information already expressed will be used towards our research. 11. My research will be done by analyzing ‘crime dramas’ to answer the question of, to what extent they accurately depict the struggles women face in the Criminal Justice Field. Shows will be selected for analyzing if they meet the following criteria.

    1. The show have at least two seasons, and are they available for viewing.
    2. The show must not be centralized around one singular person, rather a group or ‘team’.
    3. The show must not have a heavy plot line, in other words, not continue episode to episode.
    4. The show must be about a job within the field of Criminal Justice (i.e. police officers,
    forensic science, Government Agents)
    5. The show must be no older than ten years.

If the show meets all of the criteria I will begin analyzing it. To do this I will compile a detailed list of questions which I will answer for each episode watched (i.e. How many female/male leads were there?, How many lines did each gender have?, How often were each gender acknowledged by their superiors?). The questions will compare the difference in treatment and representation between the male and female characters on the shows selected, with this, I then can compare it to ‘real life’ data, which will allow me to answer my research question.

  13. My plan for research is to investigate whether true escape for Tom and Laura Wingfield is a possibility. For my paper, I will be conducting a textual analysis analyzing The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams. To do this, I will be reviewing various scholarly articles written on the subject. I will be evaluating the major themes of memory and the impossibility of escape. I have eight articles that will help me shape my argument for the impossibility of true physical AND mental escape from the influence/expectations of the mother, Amanda.

  22. Since my research topic is based on animal testing, I will be analyzing different companies that test on animal subjects and determining whether they sell more product compared to companies that do not animal test. I will also take into consideration whether they are known to produce more "quality" products. I will be evaluating some major brand names and taking how they test their products for hazardous side effects into consideration. I will incorporate my findings into my paper and consider it when establishing the answer to my research question, "How have companies improved their ethics and testing methods in order to prevent harming animal test subjects as they have done in the past?"
