Organizing Presentation Program (Group 1) individual posting due by 11:59pm on 4/22; Group Title and Blurb due by 11:59pm on 4/25

The purpose of this posting area is two-fold:
1.     You are to post a response that delivers the title of your project followed by a short blurb that describes your project.

            Here’s an example:  

Underlying Problems Associated with Writing in Workplaces: Fear and Lack of Culture
Scholars and pundits lament lacking writing abilities for workplace situations, but an exploration of workplace cultures embodying ‘good writing’ as part of the company’s core mission reveals important results. A trio of case studies explores workplace writing cultures at fortune 500 companies to identify best practices involved in cultivating positive writing cultures.

2.     In addition to your own blurb, you are tasked with coming up with a title and subsequent blurb that represents the entire group. You are tasked with making a second posting that names the group of projects and delivers a blurb to describe the panel. The best group description will be used in the program for the final presentation, and the person who delivers the most effectively written description will earn a 4 point bonus on the final presentation.

  1. 1.) The Not So Wonderful World of Disney: An Analysis of Gender in Disney Princess Films

    Given Disney’s prominent position in children’s media, and its dominant role as an agent of socialization for kids, it is imperative to examine the messages contained within their films as they relate to gender and race in order to better understand how children are being socialized. The 12 Disney princess movies were analyzed and coded for feminine and masculine characteristics displayed by the films main female and male characters, and a survey was conducted in order to address the questions related to how Disney has impacted several generations of it's viewers.

  2. 2.) Gender Representation in the Media
    The members of this panel will be exploring various concepts related to gender stereotyping in different media platforms. It is our goal to expose how such content has affected, and continues to affect, sex role perceptions and gender related consumerism, as well as to examine the presentation of female characters in comparison to their male counterparts.

  3. Women of the Criminal Justice Field: On Screen and Off

    It has been known that crime dramas depict an unrealistic picture of what the world of policing is really like. This research expands on the initial issue with these programs and explores the representation of the working women within the Criminal Justice field and how that representation crosses over into the fictional world of television crime dramas. Along with the representation, the discussion will also include the types of treatment that women typically face in field of Criminal Justice that made numerous appearances on popular crime dramas. The goal of this research is to shed light upon the sever gender discrimination both on and off the small screen.

  4. Throughout the history of comic books female characters have been known to reflect societal views on women, this has caused superheroines in comic books to be inaccurate representations of real women. This research shows the misrepresentations of women in comic books, including the false portrayals, under representations and objectifications of them. This research looks into who is aware of these discrepancies between men and women in comics, and discusses weather this is causing any changes in the comic book industry. This research was done to explore the misinterpretations and objectifications of women in comics and make these issues aware in order to progress in the comic book industry.

  5. Gender in The Media:
    This panel will cover issues surrounding the representation of women across three popular media outlets. Discussions will include the representation of women on screen compared to off as well as, the effects of hyper masculinity and femininity on today's society and how it is effecting the businesses who are a source of the misrepresentation of women. It is the goal of this panel to shed light on the gender discrimination that has been in front of us all along but, continues to be ignored.

  7. Gender in the Media

    This panel explores the portrayals of woman in three different media formats: crime shows, comic books, and Disney movies. The researchers have analyzed how women are represented including their inaccuracies and comparisons to male characters, and each are determined to bring these factors to light. And as a result, uncover the sex discrimination and adherence to gender roles that are prevalent in today’s media.
